Acids

You must have heard of or used acids before. The word "acid" is derived from a Latin word which means "sour". This is the property that distinguishes these chemical compounds from other compounds such as bases and salts. Some examples include acetic acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and more. Some of these compounds can be found in nature, and are termed organic acids.

You can know an acid from the level of acidity it is. This degree of acidity is measured using a scale called pH. This scale runs from 0 to 14. A substance with a pH of 7 is considered neutral. Any substance that displays less than 7 on this scale is considered acidic in nature.

These substances are used widely in a variety of industries. The most important uses of these compounds is in the manufacture of chemicals such as petroleum, fertilizers, iron, synthetic fabrics, pigments, dyes, pesticides, plastics and more. This is what makes acids very important in daily life.
