Ammonium Chloride

This chemical is a white, crystalline salt. It is odorless and soluble in alcohol and methanol. It is stable in the air, but it is toxic to humans. Ammonium chloride is produced by mixing hydrochloric acid and ammonia. Solutions of this substance are slightly acidic.

The primary application for ammonium chloride is in fertilizers. It acts as a primary source of nitrogen for these products. Almost 90% of the ammonium chloride made is for this purpose. Other uses of this chemical include medicine, where it acts as an expectorant. It can also be utilized to flavor some varieties of licorice. In the food industry, it goes by the name sal ammoniac.

This substance is not highly toxic, but it can irritate the skin and eyes. Proper protection should be worn at all times, and it should be stored in a cool, dry area. It is not flammable and does not produce any vapors.
