Sodium Fluoride

Sodium Fluoride is an inorganic compound with a chemical formula of NaF. It is a colorless solid and is less expensive than potassium fluoride. In preparation, sodium fluoride is made by neutralizing hydrofluoric acid from the production of superphosphate fertilizer. In 1986, there was a report that several million tons of sodium fluoride are used annually worldwide.

In terms of use, it has been studied for treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, though it does not appear to be effective and does not reduce the risk of fractures. For medical imaging, sodium fluoride is used as a tracer to help with skeletal imaging. Lastly, sodium fluoride is often added to drinking water in cities around the country because it helps with maintaining dental health and strengthening the teeth by forming fluorapatite, which is a naturally-occurring component of tooth enamel.
