Ammonium Thiocyanate

Ammonium thiocyanate is often sold as a water-soluble colorless crystalline solid. It is used for a variety of purposes, including for photography, in chemical analysis, and as a fertilizer. It has no odor and is highly corrosive to metals like copper, iron, and brass.

The molecular weight of ammonium thiocyanate is 76.177 g/mol. It also has a complexity of 31.3 and a heavy atom count of four. The monoisotopic mass and exact mass are both 76.01 g/mol. The compound has a boiling point of 338° F (170° C), a melting point of 320° F (149.6° C), and solubility in water of 8.28 M. Ammonium thiocyanate is also soluble in ethanol, ammonia, acetone, and sulfur dioxide. It is only mildly soluble in acetonitrile and completely insoluble in chloroform.

In addition to the industries already listed, the compound can be found as an ingredient in freezing solutions like liquid rocket propellants. Ammonium thiocyanate is also a common component of industrial glues, in weed killers and defoliants, and used in pickling steel and iron.
