Crystal Violet

A synthetic violet dye, crystal violet is a relative of the compound rosaniline and most frequently used as a stain in microscopy and as an antiseptic in the treatment of skin infections. It is also known for its antibacterial, antifungal, and anthelmintic properties in addition to its use as an antiseptic. In dentistry and medicine, crystal violet is used for marking the skin before surgery prep or allergy test prep. It has also proven effective in the treatment of candida albicans and related infections such as thrush, tinea, athletes foot, yeast infections, ringworm, and jock itch. Crystal violet can also be used as an alternative to penicillin in cases where the patient has shown a demonstrable allergy to that particular antibiotic when treating impetigo. This compound is synthesized by combining tetra-, penta-, and hexa-methylated pararosaniline.
