Dioctyl Phthalate is a common compound that is utilized as a plasticiser in a variety of different industries and devices. It is particularly common in medical devices, including different types of intravenous tubing and bags, different ranges of catheters, nasogastric tubes, different ranges of dialysis bags and tubing, in addition to air tubes and blood bags. It is for this reason that the compound is carefully monitored, and there is concern about the presence of leachates that can interfere with substances in the containers.
The compound itself is highly toxic and can interfere with natural metabolic reactions in living organisms. While its acute toxicity is relatively low, there are concerns expressed about the compound and how it may act as an endocrine disruptor. Scientists have also performed studies and found that there is a link between patients who suffered from obesity and the presence of this compound in their bloodstream.
