Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether

Also known as 2-Butoxyethanol, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (EGME) is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor that is derived as a butyl ether of ethylene glycol. EGME possesses a low volatility, low toxicity, and makes a good solvent with applications in various industrial and domestic products as a surfactant. It is generally produced via the ethoxylation reaction of butanol and ethylene oxide in the presence of a catalyst, and over 100 million pounds of EGME are produced each year. Commercially, EGME is used as a paint and surface coating solvent, and in various cleaning products and inks. Additionally, it is used in acrylic resin formulations, firefighting foam, asphalt release agents, degreaser, oil spill dispersants, whiteboard cleaners, cosmetics, leather protectant, varnish removers, and silicone caulk. The industrial uses of EGME are primarily seen in the petroleum industry, where it is used in fracturing fluids, oil slick dispersants, and drilling stabilizers to absorb water that is brought up along with oil.
