Potassium Chloride USP
Potassium Chloride USP is a naturally occurring mineral called sylvite, and is also the metal halide salt. In its most pure form Potassium Chloride USP is both colorless and odorless, and has a small, crystalline appearance.
Medically, Potassium Chloride is utilized for the treatment of hypokalemia, which is a condition where the body has lower than normal levels or potassium in the bloodstream. This is often concerning, as potassium is a critical electrolyte that maintains proper functioning of both muscle and nerve cells---primarily muscle cells within the heart. Most individuals are able to obtain enough potassium by eating a well-balanced diet. However, a selection of conditions can impact the body's ability to regulate its potassium level. These conditions include prolonged and severe vomiting or diarrhea (as often seen in flu patients) as well as hormone problems as seen with diseases such as hyperaldosteronism.
In the agricultural industry Potassium Chloride is used as a component of a fertilizer called muriate of potash. The addition of the mineral helps to increase the potassium intake of plants.
