Potassium Citrate

Potassium citrate, a salt of potassium and citric acid, is produced by adding potassium carbonate or potassium bicarbonate to a citric acid solution until effervescence stops, at which point the liquid is filtered and evaporated to a granular form. The molecular formula for this substance is C6H5K3O7. It is a white powder, slightly hydroscopic, odorless, tastes like salt, and is composed of 38.3% potassium by mass.

Potassium citrate, labeled E332, is often added to processed food. It is used to regulate acidity, and is used as a buffering agent in many soft drinks. Medically, the chemical helps manage kidney stones that result from either cystine or uric acid. Potassium citrate is considered effective in treating and managing arrhythmia and gout when a patient is hypokalemic. It also has use for both humans and pets as a urinary alkanizer, making urine less acid and tending to reduce problems with painful, frequent urination associated with urine that is very acidic.
