Sodium Peroxide

This is an inorganic compound that was used on a wide-scale before researchers determine how to produce hydrogen peroxide on a large scale. It typically appears as a powder that is yellow to white in color.

The molecular formula for sodium peroxide consists of two sodium atoms and two oxygen atoms. This arrangement results when you burn sodium in the presence of oxygen. It is a basic compound, which appears in several hydrates and peroxyhydrates. It has a boiling point of 1,215 degrees Fahrenheit and reacts violently with water.

This substance is effective at oxidizing. However, it is used much less now that there are other, less expensive methods for achieving the same results. It is still used in certain processes, such as extracting minerals from ores in laboratories. It is also used in scuba gear to generate pure oxygen.

This substance also goes by the name of sodium dioxide.
