It is a clear, colorless liquid. It is relatively thick and oily. Another common name for sulfuric acid is oil of vitriol. When heated, it can produce strong, thick, acrid odors. Otherwise, it does not produce any scent. It is also tasteless, although harmful if swallowed.
This acid is utilized to treat phosphate rock to produce phosphoric acid, which is a primary ingredient in making fertilizer. About 60% of the world’s supply is created for this purpose. This chemical can also be found in a wide array of other industries, including the production of dyes, resins, detergents, paints, lubricants, and batteries.
Gloves, goggles, and a breathing mask must be worn at all times when handling this substance. It is highly corrosive and can cause severe chemical burns or blindness. Excessive inhalation or ingestion will result in death. This acid is not flammable, but it should be stored in a cool, dry area.
