Zinc Pyrion (Zinc Pyrithione)
This coordination complex derived from zinc is a fungistatic and bacteriostatic substance used primarily for treating seborrheic dermatitis. It is added to anti-dermatitis and anti-dandruff shampoos and is also known to be effective in treating the effects of infection by streptococcus and staphylococcus genera pathogens. Additionally, the treatment of psoriasis, eczema, ringworm, fungus, dry skin, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, tinea, and athlete's foot also involve application of zinc pyrion. In industrial applications, it is an additive in outdoor paint to prevent and protect against mildew and algae. It is also an extremely effective algaecide, and helps slow the effectives of decomposition of paint due to UV light exposure. Zinc pyrion is also added to household sponges in order to eliminate and prevent the growth of bacteria. While it is very effective for external applications and as an additive though, it is toxic if ingested and trigger a variety of adverse health responses.
